AGROFORESTRY SUPPORTS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE
Agroforestry coffee farming means that coffee trees are grown beneath the canopy and within the landscape of other trees. This agricultural model leverages the benefits of trees – protecting and restoring key ecosystems and helping farmers adapt to the effects of climate change while diversifying their income.
Convinced by agroforestry’s role in supporting regenerative agriculture, we began promoting it as part of the AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, together with key partners such as Pur Projet, TechnoServe and others.
5 MILLION TREES PLANTED BY 2020
A key principle followed across all our agroforestry operations is that only native trees are planted. Experience tell us that, during the transition of farming practices from one model to another, the trust and bond built between our partners, agronomists and the farmers helps ensure success.
In our efforts to not only preserve but also restore coffee ecosystems and inset our operational carbon footprint we are aiming for 5 million trees to be planted by 2020. By the end of 2018, we had already reached 75% of this target with agroforestry deployed in Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Brazil and Indonesia.
